Tesla is gaining more and more positive attention in China. Model Y is being purchased by more government agencies in different provinces, auto sales in the country are growing, and the company is looking to launch its insurance business there.
China sales rose in July
Giga Shanghai’s sales rose 15% in July, marking a reversal from a downward trend. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), sales of cars made in China totaled 74,117 vehicles. Tesla China’s July numbers were the second-best start to a quarter in Giga Shanghai’s history.
Model Y was approved for purchase by the Province of Fujian
Tesla is celebrating another victory as government agencies in a second Chinese province have added Model Y to their procurement list. Government agencies in the eastern province of Fujian can now buy the electric vehicle for corporate use. The announcement comes just a month after Tesla Model Ys were added to the government procurement list of Jiangsu Province in eastern China. Experts expect provinces and regions across the country to soon begin expanding purchases of foreign-brand EVs, including Tesla.
Tesla Insurance shows signs of life in China
The Texas-based automaker has long sought to enter the Chinese market with its insurance product. Tesla sought regulatory approval to sell insurance products in the country more than three years ago when it registered the company in 2020. However, it withdrew that registration in April this year. Now, data from the National Enterprise Credit Information Public System showed that Tesla registered an insurance brokerage firm in China on July 30 with a registered capital of RMB 50 million ($6.92 million). This is a move that indicates the company is seriously preparing to bring Tesla Insurance to the country.
Tesla produced the 10 millionth drive unit
Last week, the company reached a major milestone: producing its 10 millionth drive unit. The milestone was achieved by the Giga Shanghai team. Of particular note is the fact that in early June, Giga Nevada announced the production of its 5 millionth drive unit. This means that the other 5 million were produced by other Tesla factories combined.
Tesla is testing increased charging speeds at Supercharger stations
Tesla is testing increased charging speeds at select Supercharger stations in the United States. Tests are being conducted at Supercharger stations equipped with the latest V4 stalls and the same power cabinets as the V3 stations.
This was discovered by the owner of a Tesla Cybertruck, Teslatino, who achieved a peak charging power of 323 kW at a V3+ Supercharger station in Los Gatos, California. Later, Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill confirmed that the company is conducting tests at selected stations.
