Tesla owners love tech, and what’s more exciting than connecting your Nintendo Switch to your Tesla’s screen? While this guide focuses on the Nintendo Switch, these steps work for connecting any HDMI-output device to a Tesla Model 3 or Y touchscreen. With the right setup, you’ll be gaming or streaming on your Tesla screen in no time.
Why Connect a Nintendo Switch to Your Tesla?
The Tesla infotainment system has advanced multimedia capabilities, but doesn’t natively support HDMI inputs. By installing an HDMI interface in your Tesla, you can use your touchscreen to display any HDMI-compatible device, including gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch. Imagine relaxing at a charging station and passing the time with a quick game of Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros!
Step 1: Purchase the Right HDMI Conversion Cable
To begin, you need a Portable Switch Dock USB-C to 4K HDMI Conversion Cable designed for the Nintendo Switch. Not all HDMI adapters work with the Switch, so choose a product specifically compatible with it. This adapter takes your Switch’s USB-C output and converts it to HDMI, making it display-compatible with your Tesla screen. There are many companies that makes these, just search for "USB-C to 4K HDMI Nintendo Switch" on Amazon and you'll find one. It should look like the one below:
Step 2: Install an HDMI Interface in Your Tesla
Before connecting any HDMI device, your Tesla Model 3 or Y must be outfitted with an HDMI interface. Many Tesla owners who want HDMI connectivity install a third-party HDMI interface behind their screen. This installation is typically done by following a specific guide, which you can find online. Some helpful sources even pin a step-by-step tutorial on X (formerly Twitter), making the process straightforward.
Step 3: Connect the HDMI Adapter to the Interface
Once you have the HDMI interface installed:
- Attach the HDMI adapter: Connect the HDMI end of your Portable Switch Dock cable to the HDMI interface you installed in the Tesla.
- Plug into the Nintendo Switch: Insert the USB-C end of the adapter into the Nintendo Switch. Ensure it’s fully connected to get a stable video output.

Step 4: Powering the Nintendo Switch
Your Switch requires a steady power source for extended gaming sessions. Tesla models offer several options:
-
For 2021+ Models: Use the USB-C port at the back of the center console. Newer Tesla models come with these USB-C ports by default, providing a simple, wired connection to keep your Switch powered.
-
For Older Models with USB-A Ports: Use a USB-C to USB-A cable to connect the Switch. Alternatively, connect a 12-volt adapter in the armrest, then run the power cable through the console. This keeps wiring less visible while ensuring a stable power source.
Tip: Avoid long, tangled wires by using just enough length to reach from your power source to the Nintendo Switch.
Step 5: Switch to the HDMI Input on the Tesla Touchscreen
After setting up the HDMI connection, power on the Nintendo Switch. Tesla’s HDMI interface setup includes a button to select the HDMI input.
- Activate the HDMI Input: Press the button on your HDMI interface to switch from Tesla’s regular interface to the HDMI input. This action lets the Switch’s display appear directly on your Tesla screen.
- Enjoy Your Game: You should now see the Nintendo Switch interface on your Tesla’s touchscreen, allowing you to start gaming.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
If your setup doesn’t work immediately, try these troubleshooting tips:
- Check HDMI Compatibility: Not all adapters are fully compatible with Tesla screens. Ensure you’re using a recommended HDMI adapter that supports 4K output.
- Adjust Power Sources: If the Switch’s screen dims or shuts off, check the USB cable and power port to confirm the connection. Tesla’s USB-C ports in newer models usually offer sufficient power, but older models may need a stronger adapter.
Additional Tips for Other HDMI Devices
These steps aren’t limited to the Nintendo Switch! You can use the same HDMI interface and setup process to connect other HDMI-output devices like laptops, tablets, or even other gaming consoles. Tesla’s HDMI interface allows versatile multimedia display options, making your touchscreen more functional than ever.
Connecting your Nintendo Switch to your Tesla opens up a world of entertainment options right in your car. With just an HDMI adapter, Tesla HDMI interface, and power connection, you’re ready to go. So whether you're parked or waiting at a charging station, bring your favorite games along for the ride.
